Onsite Report 2007

Welcome to this journey of American Buddhist Forest Tradition
Nuns !
This site offers information on this new line of Buddhist nuns
which began in the United States under the guidance of
an Senior American Buddhist monk. Venerable Bhante Vimalaramsi who is the
abbot of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Center
His training is fully shared with both men and women entering into ordination training.
 Women are trained equally here in the Dhamma.
Perhaps this is a first!  It's time!

Our Mission

                                     This group is strictly about the Dhamma!
 It is not
about feminist politics supporting the production of a large quantity of new Bhikkunis. It is not about demanding equal respect but rather it's about giving and earning equal respect through the same training any other male Samanera would travel. This group is strictly about the preservation and teaching of the original Buddha Dhamma. It is about producing Buddhist nuns of fine quality with a clear understanding and deep respect of the Buddhist Meditation and the Dhamma,  and who will learn to respectfully give and teach others the Dhamma no matter who they are. This is about equality founded on the basis of compassion, respect, equal opportunity and sincere effort. This was the Buddha's way.

While carrying on an abiding respect for the World Buddhist Sangha at large [All world communities of Buddhist monks and nuns], the nuns of the American Buddhist Forest Tradition will be dedicated to:

  • Supporting peaceful co-existence in the World.
  • Supporting the growth and expansion of the Dhamma Sukha Meditation Study Center which offers, in turn, our land space, protection and sustenance
  • Reducing suffering and teaching people how to have happiness in life by learning how things actually work!
  • Offering equal training from the Suttas and vinaya to both monks and nuns (without ANY sexual bias)
  • Encouraging lay people to personally investigate and test the Dhamma in everyday life
  • Continually researching, studying, practicing, preserving and teaching the Buddha Dhamma in simple English and and assist foreign speaking  monastics who desire to learn clear Dhamma English to help them teach Westerners;
  •  Following the Vinaya as closely as possible within an American culture to bring relief from suffering, happiness and peace to all human beings;
  •  Performing compassionate service by providing a place for others to learn the Buddha's direct route to the cessation of suffering in this life.
  •  Assisting the continuation of this Dispensation of the Buddha Gotama for as long as possible.

Group Profile-----------

As forest nuns our mission is to practice the original Buddhist practices in an effort to support and teach the Buddha Dhamma. This monastic order renounces the householders life, leaves society and exists on Dana/donations from lay and monastic communities throughout the world for the purpose of serving the world community and supporting future peaceful co-existence. Donations are made through the United International Buddha Dhamma Society Inc. (UIBDS), which is the supporting non-profit temple/church structure sustaining this order. UIBDS also sets up alliances with other Buddhist traditions and centers throughout the world who hold similar interest in teaching the original Buddha Dhamma to people for the sake of Peace and order in the World. Striving to demonstrate how the original meditation practice can be integrated into modern daily life bringing relief from suffering, returning joy and happiness to the common person is the goal of the teaching. Your kind support is welcome as your center develops to serve you. The Buddhist monastic tradition is of great merit for all beings and leads toward Peace among people of all nations offering enrichment to all faiths.

Remarks:

"This project truly is a new approach to Buddhism and a refreshing adventure in America." This group holds in great respect the entire World Buddhist Sangha and looks forward to its support and enthusiasm towards women and men being equally trained and disciplined as monks in the 21st century.

The remark heard most often from students when studying meditation with our American Abbot is "Oh WOW!" or "At last, Buddhism has finally come home 'clearly' to the West! It's not confusing anymore. This brings it all together!" This is followed by sincere smiles and much happy energy for this wonderful discovery of how to live in the present moment with joy and balanced acceptance returning to people's lives.

One student commented, "It's true! One CAN actually live in a smile and it changes everything! It is great fun to watch this happening for people. Come and see!" Chris F./Australia

"For me coming to find Dhamma Sukha and the nuns project was like finally seeing Buddhism come home in the West! Wonderful!" Sue/ U.K.
